More About Roof Membrane

What is roof membrane?

Breathable roof membranes are an important part of any roofing system, providing protection and insulation while also allowing for adequate ventilation. Roof membranes come in a variety of materials, including modified bitumen, single-ply thermoplastics, asphalt-saturated felt and insulated metal panels. Each type of membrane offers different benefits to fit various types of roofs and climates.

Modified bitumen is a type of asphalt-based material that provides superior waterproofing for roofs. It’s typically composed of two layers: the top layer (ply) is normally composed of an asphalt plastic modified with rubber or resin, while the bottom layer (base) is composed of a non-woven fleece or polyester fabric that’s been impregnated with adhesive. This combination makes modified bitumen incredibly durable, able to resist water damage, high winds and heavy traffic.

Single-ply thermoplastic roof membranes can provide superior waterproofing protection and durability at a lower cost than traditional roofing materials like slate or clay tiles. These membranes usually consists of reinforced membranes made from ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM), thermoplastic olefin (TPO) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). EPDM has become particularly popular due to its superior flexibility and ability to expand and contract with temperature changes without cracking or tearing. TPO offers similar performance characteristics but can be more difficult to install due to its lack of puncture resistance when compared to modified bitumen or EPDM. PVC is often used as a decorative option since it’s available in many colors, textures and patterns.

Why do you need roof membrane?

Roof membranes provide long-lasting protection from water penetration and damage due to sun exposure, extreme temperatures, and other environmental factors. Roof membranes come in many different materials, including asphalt-saturated felt paper, rubberized asphalt, polyurethane foam, modified bitumen sheets, thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO), ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber membranes, PVC-coated fabrics, and others.

These materials vary in terms of their durability and resistance to ultraviolet light or temperature fluctuations. The most popular types of roof membrane are asphalt-saturated felt paper and modified bitumen sheets. Asphalt-saturated felt paper offers good performance when applied correctly while modified bitumen sheets offer superior durability but may require professional installation. Roof membranes also can be self-adhesive or require an adhesive for installation.

Self-adhesives provide a more permanent seal than non-self-adhesive membranes which may require periodic maintenance depending on the environment they are subjected to. For example, self-adhesive membranes have higher resistance to wind uplift than non-self adhesive membranes if the proper adhesive is used during application.

How much roof membrane do you need?

The roof membrane will need to cover the whole roof, so its best to calculate the m2 of the roof to know how much you will require. Our Strotex Breathable Membranes comes in rolls of 50m x 1m so you can easily get the length of coverage required for your project without any hassle or waste material. This durable membrane is also incredibly affordable compared with other similar products currently on the market – making it a great choice when you’re looking for an economic but effective way of protecting your roof from the elements.

When selecting your roofing membrane it is important to consider both your current needs and any future requirements you may have for your building’s construction as well as the climate you live in to ensure you select an appropriate product for your specific needs.
